Benefits to the Employer

Co-op employers have access to students who possess strong academic backgrounds and practical skills applicable in the workplace. Employers benefit from being directly involved in the professional and academic development of potential future employees. Those who participate in the Cooperative Education Program experience significant advantages for their organizations due to their involvement.

Employers gain access to a year-round supply of motivated and highly qualified students eager to gain work experience. The co-op program serves as an effective succession planning tool, allowing employers to evaluate students in a work environment before extending permanent job offers. To support daily operations, students may be assigned short-term projects in situations where hiring permanent staff would be impractical or where current employees are in short supply.

Both employers and their employees benefit from the fresh ideas and enthusiasm that students contribute to the workplace. Additionally, participating in co-op programs helps enhance your company’s visibility on campus and within the community, as students serve as goodwill ambassadors for both their employers and the college. This collaboration can also pave the way for future partnerships with the college.

Benefits to the Student

Students gain valuable work experience through paid on-the-job training. Co-op placements can lead to full-time employment, as cooperative education enables students to connect their studies with practical experience. This real-world work term helps students make informed career decisions. Additionally, the work term and subsequent report contribute to developing students’ communication skills. The experience gained enhances their maturity and self-confidence. The salary earned can help offset educational expenses. Overall, the practical experience acquired through cooperative education significantly enhances graduates’ employment potential. Participating students often report a very positive attitude toward the professional, personal, and educational benefits they have gained from the Cooperative Education Program.
